You'll need
- handful of kibble or small treats
Set up
Choose a patch of lawn, a shaggy rug or a large towel. Take a handful from your dog's daily food.
How to play
Ask your dog to wait, or have someone hold the lead, while you scatter.
Throw the kibble in a wide arc over the grass or rug, like feeding chickens.
Say "Find it" and let your dog go.
Stand still and stay quiet. Let your dog sniff at their own pace.
When the searching slows down, scatter one last small handful close by.
Finish with "All done" and a calm stroke if your dog enjoys it.
House rules
- No hurrying: this game is about slow sniffing.
- Use part of the meal, not extra food.
- Make it easier
- Scatter on a smooth floor in a small area so pieces are easy to see.
- Make it harder
- Scatter in longer grass, over a wider area, or mix in some leaves so the nose has to sort through them.
Signs it's having fun
Steady, slow sniffing, relaxed body, soft breathing. Many dogs settle afterwards.
Stop if you see
Your dog seems frantic, ignores the food, or starts eating grass or debris instead.
Safety
- Check the area for snail bait, fertiliser, mushrooms and litter first.
- Feed dogs in separate areas if anyone guards food.
