How to play
Push a toy or treat into shallow snow while your dog watches.
Say "Find it" and let your dog dig.
Hide the next a bit deeper, or several in a row.
Keep it to 10 minutes.
Back inside, wipe paws and check between toes for ice balls.
House rules
- Short sessions.
- Paws checked every time.
- Make it easier
- Toys right on top of the snow.
- Make it harder
- Bury deeper, or hide treats in a snow trail.
Signs it's having fun
Bouncing, face-planting into the snow, zoomies.
Stop if you see
Shivering, holding paws up, slowing down. Head inside.
Safety
- Avoid road salt and grit: wipe paws after. Salt is irritating and can be toxic if licked.
- Small, thin-coated and senior dogs get cold fast; use a coat and keep it short.
- Ears, paws and tail tips are most at risk from frostbite. Call your vet if they look pale or grey.
- Stay off frozen ponds.
